National Estuaries Volunteer Day – Oyster Habitat Restoration

The North Carolina Coastal Federation (www.nccoast.org) invites volunteers to celebrate the beauty and productivity of our coastal waters by helping with an oyster restoration project at the Morris Landing Clean Water Preserve. The project is part of National Estuaries Day, a national celebration to highlight the importance, beauty and vulnerability of these special places where the rivers meet the sea.

Join us along the shores of Stump Sound as we work on a project to create oyster habitat and restore the shoreline of Morris Landing. We need your help to fill mesh bags with oyster shells and limestone marl. We will be supplying a bob-cat to do the hard work, but we will still need many hands to cut, seal and stack the shellbags. The bags eventually will be used to create an oyster reef that will help control erosion.

We will also be conducting a shoreline clean-up, pulling seine nets and hosting other fun educational activities. You will also have a chance to learn more about some of our ongoing and planned projects in Stump Sound. Join us and bring your friends, family and coworkers. Please come out for a couple of hours or for the whole day to participate in a fun and rewarding activity.

Refreshments, supplies and equipment will be provided. This event is suitable for all ages. Pre-registration is requested.
