Job title or description:
The National Adult Literacy Survey puts 24% of adults in the Cape Fear region at the lowest literacy level – below the 5th grade. This means that about one in four people struggle daily to perform the basic skills they need to survive and to provide for their families

At the Cape Fear Literacy Council, we help adults improve their skills in: reading, writing, spelling, math, GED, computers, job preparedness, and English as a Second Language (ESL). As a result, learners are more confident in themselves and capable of achieving their goals.

The Cape Fear Literacy Council helps to break the cycle of illiteracy by working with adults to improve their lives.

Our services are FREE, individualized, flexible, and confidential.

Volunteer interests or needs:
The Cape Fear Literacy Council depends on volunteers – they are the backbone of our organization. Volunteers who go through training to be tutors are the ones who directly teach and support adult learners who are working to improve their lives.

Becoming a tutor is a significant commitment; helping someone improve his or her literacy and life skills requires dedication on the part of the volunteer. However, it is a rewarding experience, one that is often inspiring and that can literally change someone's life. The Literacy Council is always looking for volunteer tutors to help meet the need of the communities we serve.

There are other instructional opportunities such as teaching a small class or in the computer lab.
