Giving back in Southeastern North Carolina
WILMINGTON | Si Cantwell's Here Now column of Feb. 3 featured Mallory Carpenter, a sixth-grader who is collecting supplies for Good Shepherd Center.
I introduced her and her mom, Lisa Schmidt, at the 2010 StarNews Conscience Fair on Feb. 6.
The StarNews has invited Mallory to put a collection barrel in its lobby. We're located at 1003 S. 17th St., and her colorfully decorated barrel is just inside the main entrance. The StarNews is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
She is collecting food, clothes and other necessities such as toiletries for Good Shepherd Center, which provides shelter and services for the homeless. Her list includes canned goods; items needed to serve meals such as cooking oil, condiments, napkins and dishwashing soap; sheets, blankets, towels and washcloths; new or gently used clothes including gloves, belts and sunglasses; and daily hygiene items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, disposable razors, alcohol-free mouthwash and small bottles of sunscreen.
