Nonprofits can benefit by using social media

Shannan Bowen, a reporter here who is helping the StarNews jump into the world of social media, thought ConscienceOnline.com readers might be interested in this article about how nonprofits can benefit from using social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook.
He mentions Ning sites as a way to recruit and retain volunteers. You're already familiar with Ning: ConscienceOnline.com is a Ning site. This is a social networking site roughly built on the Facebook model.
The Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross is doing great work in figuring out ways to increase awareness of its programs and reap the benefits of social networking. Here's a piece I did with them back in October. I'm sure Autum Mihm at the Red Cross would be happy to talk with other nonprofits about using social media.

Yes, social media is a valuable tool for getting out information to a large number of people in a short amount of time. It can be cost effective for organizations and reaches a lot of groups that no longer utilize traditional media outlets. I would be happy to speak with anyone about some of the social media tools the Cape Fear Chapter has been utilizing. My email is autum.mihm@arccapefear.org. I also suggest you visit our micro-site which connects you with all our social media sites.
